Headstones Hate Teenage City Employees

While taking photos of tombstones to post on Find-a-grave, I'm finding a LOT of old tombstones that have been damaged or broken off by teenagers driving city-owned lawnmowers. The damage is appalling.

The stone I’d seen in the fall now looked like this:

 

By mid-December the surviving top half of the 120-old-stone  had been “replanted” by city employees.

 

Quickly scanning my photos, I found many more examples of wanton destruction by the “summer teens” that had been hired to mow the lawns in the city cemetery.

Louis Larsen – Spanish American War Vet

Louis Larsen served in the U.S. Volunteer Calvary during the Spanish – American War.  He is buried in the Lehi City Cemetery, Utah.

Tombstone Photos in the Fall

Living in a mountain climate limits the season available to take tombstone photos.  There is something special about walking through the fall leaves, smelling their smells, enjoying the last warmth of the sun amid the quiet of the tombstones.

The memories made are unique: the angle of the sun, shortness of the day, scents, the solitude of created by the rapid approach of winter snow.

Margaret Murdock and her Daughters

Margaret Molen Murdock died in Lehi, Utah on 29 Jan 1864.  Her daughters, Margaret and Lurany died within a few years of her death.  All are buried together in the Lehi City Cemetery. 

Their marker was broken off over time and was repaired by setting the broken stone in a concrete form.

Information update from John Lisle:  Margaret was married to Orrice Clapp Murdock, a descendant of the Robert Murdock and Hannah Stedman family of Newton, Massachusetts. His father was John Murdock, b. 1792. John arrived from Nauvoo in SLC in 1847."

Emily Blacknall Hoggard Tombstone

Emily Blacknall married James Hoggard on 26 Feb 1842 in Calverton, Nottinghamshire, England.

The couple had 14 children. They moved to Utah, arriving in Salt Lake City in April 1856. After a few weeks, they moved south to Lake City which is now known as American Fork, Utah.

Emily and James are buried in the American Fork City Cemetery.

Children of Joseph and Nancy Hoggard

Joseph and Nancy Eldredge Hoggard lost six young children within ten years of each other.   All are buried in the American Fork, Utah city cemetery.

Piper Hill Cemetery – Stewartstown, NH

After years of searching, I found many of my ancestors buried in the Piper Hill cemetery a little south of Stewartstown, New Hampshire.

The Tombstone is Failing

Weather and time are taking a serious toll on Albert Clarke’s tombstone.  Made of concrete, the best material his family could afford, the marker is disintegrating.  Water and ice will continue to do their destructive work until the marker totally fails in the not too distant future.

Her Carved Headstone

Maud Mary Bathgate Logan Adams was so loved by her husband that  considerable stone working skills were used to carve her headstone.  The inscription is disappearing on the semi-hard 100 year old stone.  Like many other makers in the cemetery, it is being abused by city owned lawnmowers piloted by teenage boys.  The design is unique and the sentiment of a loving husband has been on display for generations of descendants and visitors to the cemetery.

Saint Peter’s ~ Dissenters Burial Ground ~ Broadstairs, England

The Dissenters Burial Ground was closed in 1937, part of it having already being built over in 1894. The gravestones were removed to the surrounding walls in the early 1960's, but a record was maintained of their positions at that time. Many of the limestone headstones are now in a poor state and there are a number of broken stones. It was formerly known as Salem. The children's graves are 5 feet deep. The adult graves are 6 feet deep. Burial charges were assessed at one sixth per foot. Most graves are family graves with multiple burials in each grave.

And many, many more whose inscriptions have all but disappeared.
